ISRO’s ‘Bahubali’ LVM3 Launches India’s Heaviest Communication Satellite CMS-03

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has once again made the country proud. On Sunday, it successfully launched India’s heaviest communication satellite, CMS-03, using its powerful ‘Bahubali’ rocket — the LVM3-M5 — from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

The satellite, weighing about 4,400 kg, was placed safely into orbit later that day after taking off at 5:26 PM from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre’s second launch pad.

 What Makes This Mission Special

This launch is a huge milestone because CMS-03 is India’s heaviest communication satellite ever. It was carried by the indigenously built LVM3 rocket, also known as ‘Bahubali’ for its massive strength and capability.

According to ISRO, CMS-03 is a multi-band communication satellite designed to deliver services across a large ocean area, including the entire Indian landmass, for at least 15 years.

Why This Launch Matters

ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said the satellite will play a key role in strengthening India’s communication network and includes several advanced technologies. He also called it a “shining example of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” showcasing India’s growing self-reliance in space technology.

Officials from the Indian Navy said CMS-03 will boost telecommunication coverage across the Indian Ocean Region, improving maritime communication and surveillance capabilities.Retired Lt Gen Anil K. Bhatt, Director General of the Indian Space Association (ISpA) added that the mission would be a game changer for India’s national and maritime security, offering advanced & secure communication links vital for naval operations.

The LVM3 rocket used for the launch was built using fully indigenous technology, including its powerful C25 cryogenic stage. The vehicle has a proven record of successful missions since its first developmental flight, LVM3 CARE in December 2014.
