Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty Open Lower After Christmas Holiday

Stock Market Today: Indian stock markets opened lower on Friday as trading started again after the Christmas holiday. Investors stayed cautious due to low year-end trading activity and mixed global signals.

In early trade, the BSE Sensex fell by about 117 points to 85,292, while the NSE Nifty 50 slipped nearly 30 points to around 26,112. Since markets were closed on Thursday for Christmas, Friday became the last trading day of the week.

Rupee Falls Against US Dollar

The Indian rupee weakened in early trade and fell 22 paise to 89.93 against the US dollar. The fall in the rupee was mainly due to weakness in the stock market and cautious global cues.

Today Stock Market Opening Performance

At around 9:50 am, the Sensex was trading near 85,200, down about 0.25%, while the Nifty was near 26,100, down 0.20%.
Out of 16 major sectors, 14 sectors were trading in the red. Mid-cap and small-cap stocks also slipped by about 0.1% each.

December Trading Remains Slow

Both Sensex and Nifty hit record highs in November, but the markets have remained slow in December. So far this month, Sensex has fallen around 0.4% and Nifty about 0.2%.

Market Outlook

Experts say that India’s stock market outlook remains positive in the long term, but low liquidity and thin volumes at year-end may stop big market moves in the short term. Global data, earnings updates, and currency movement will decide market direction during the day.
