Meta-owned WhatsApp is testing a brand-new privacy feature for iPhone users that could change the way disappearing messages work. The latest update introduces read-based disappearing messages, where the countdown timer starts only after the recipient opens the message. The feature is currently being tested in WhatsApp beta for iOS version 26.19.10.72.
WhatsApp Testing New Privacy Feature on iPhone
According to reports from WABetaInfo, the feature first appeared in Android beta builds last month and has now reached iPhone beta testers as well. This indicates that WhatsApp is preparing a broader rollout for both Android and iOS devices in the coming months.
The new feature focuses on giving users more control over temporary conversations and sensitive information shared in chats.
How WhatsApp’s Read-Based Disappearing Messages Work
The new setting is available under the Default Message Timer section inside WhatsApp settings. Users will see a new option called “After Reading.”
Once enabled, users can choose from three timer durations:
- 5 Minutes
- 1 Hour
- 2 Hours
Unlike WhatsApp’s existing disappearing messages, the timer will not start immediately after sending the message. Instead, the countdown begins only after the recipient reads the message.
For example:
- A message sent at 10:00 AM with a 5-minute timer disappears from the sender’s phone at 10:05 AM.
- If the recipient opens the message at 10:10 AM, it stays visible on their device until 10:15 AM.
This system works independently for both users, making the feature more flexible for temporary communication.
Unread Messages Will Auto-Delete After 24 Hours
WhatsApp is also adding an automatic cleanup system for unread chats. If the recipient never opens the message, it will be deleted automatically after 24 hours.
This prevents unread disappearing messages from staying permanently inside chats and improves privacy protection for sensitive conversations.
Why This Feature Matters
The new disappearing message system is designed for short-term information sharing, including:
- OTPs and verification codes
- Passwords
- Temporary addresses
- Meeting details
- Personal conversations
The feature offers better privacy than standard chats because information disappears shortly after being viewed.
Apps like Snapchat have already used read-based disappearing messages for years. Competitors such as Telegram and Signal also provide self-destructing chat options.
With this update, WhatsApp continues expanding its privacy-focused messaging tools beyond traditional end-to-end encryption.
Important Limitations of Disappearing Messages
While the feature improves privacy, it does not completely prevent users from saving content. Recipients can still:
- Take screenshots
- Record screens externally
- Copy information manually
This means disappearing messages reduce message permanence but cannot fully guarantee complete privacy.
When Will the Feature Launch Publicly?
Currently, the feature is available only for selected iOS beta testers. Since WhatsApp has already started testing the same functionality on Android, experts believe a stable release may arrive in future updates.
However, WhatsApp has not officially announced a public rollout date yet.
As seen with many WhatsApp beta features, testing does not always guarantee an immediate release. Still, once features appear on both Android and iOS beta versions, they often move closer to a wider launch.
